Call to Action—Face of Radiology

Are you a doctor? Are you a technician? Did you go to medical school? Unfortunately these are questions our patients and prospective patients are asking to determine who we are and what role we play in their care. While we all know how hard it is to become a radiologist and all the work that goes in to our training, unfortunately the evidence shows that our patients do not. Click here to view highlights from a focus group that asked average Americans to share what they know about radiologists.

What are we going to do to change our image? Enter the ACR Face of Radiology campaign. What's that? It is a "campaign to educate patients, payers, government officials, and other health care providers on exactly what radiologists do and why their education, training, skills, and experience are vital to providing the highest quality patient care." Click here to read a press release about the campaign.

As a resident or fellow what can I do to help? Speak to 5 patients a day. Look them in the eyes, tell them that you are their doctor. Take a moment to explain to your patient how important you are in their care. The ripple effect of this effort if taken up by every radiology resident and fellow in America can change the way we are perceived. This is extremely important to protecting our profession. Let's not let misconceptions about what we do and who we are shape the way we are viewed by our patients.
