Letter to ABR regarding Oral Board Results
To the American Board of Radiology,
We are writing to you on behalf of the Resident and Fellow section of
the ACR with a suggestion regarding improving communication of results
following the oral board examination to residents. We recently
approached Dr. Reed Dunnick with the suggestion at the ACR AFIP Summit
meeting and he suggested that we draft a letter to you.
It has come to my attention that several residents, including our own
personal encounters, had experiences with delays in receiving their
results via the US mail following this year’s examination. This is, in
part, complicated by the fact that some residents travel home,
interviews, fellowship, or other the week following boards. We know this
must be trying on the staff of the ABR to try and accommodate residents
who are calling for the results. In addition, some of us can personally
attest that the week following boards was in and of itself very
stressful waiting for results.
Our suggestion is to create a secure website in which residents can log
into Wednesday evening following the boards to view board results. This
would eliminate the need for mass mailings (and the expense). In
addition, it is technically very feasible and fairly inexpensive to
develop. Most state medical licenses, driving licenses, civic
responsibilities and other entities involving identity can safely be
done online with today’s technology. Residents could be mailed or
emailed a unique login and password with initial ABR information prior
to the oral exam or given this information at the board exam. This
information could then be verified by having the residents login prior
the exam.
We think this process would ease the situation on the ABR by removing
the need for barraging the ABR with calls. In addition it would
certainly speed the process of delivering results in an expedient and
secure manner.
If you have any questions or if we could be of any further assistance,
please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Executive Council, ACR Residents and Fellows Section
Greg Galdino, MD
