MRI Training Requirements

Following the RPS meeting in San Francisco, Dr. Wald provided results from the informational survey to Harvey L. Neiman, M.D., chair ACR Board of Chancellors, in the hope that he would present information at the next meeting of the ACGME Residency Review Committee (RRC). Kay Vydareny, M.D., ACR president, also participated in the RRC meeting and reported that there had been general discussion about MRI training but nothing specific due to lack of time. Her suggestion was for the RPS Executive Committee to submit the data to the chair of the committee, Ronald J. Zagoria, MD, in order to assure placement on the next meeting's agenda. The next meeting is March 14-15, 2002 in Sante Fe, NM. Dr. Lemley will provide the data and cover letter to Dr. Zagoria.

Fellowship Match

Dr. Lemley reported on recent activities regarding a fellowship match. It seems that SCARD and APR are moving toward a universal match. The committee discussed several proposed options for the administration of the match that had been forwarded to Dr. Lemley by Dr. Yousem at Hopkins. They agreed that of the options provided, the best involved a Jan.-Feb. interview season, March matchlist submission and April match. However, the Executive Committee also voiced continued support of moving the fellowship match process to the Fall of the residents' fourth year of training.

Thank You Letter Request to 2001 RPS Participants

The committee agreed to continue the effort to ask 2001 RPS meeting participants to write thank you letters to Dr. Vydareny and a representative from their chapter. The committee also agreed that letters of this nature would help ACR leaders understand the value of continuing to sponsor residents and fellows to attend this meeting.

The October Communiqué contained an initial request for thank you letters, but to date there has been poor response. Dr. Snyder will write a letter to all 2001 RPS meeting participants asking them to write thank you letters. Kelly will send this letter out via email.

Funding and Programming for the 2002 RPS Meeting

The ACR budget for 2002 includes a reduction in funding for residents and fellows to attend the RPS meeting in conjunction with the Annual Meeting. Beginning in 2002, the ACR will contribute up to $1000 to each chapter. In the past this amount was $2000 and usually divided between two resident/fellow representatives. Dr. Wald suggested that the committee seek out other sources for funding. Kelly will consult with the ACR's corporate relations director to see what other funding options are available.

The committee then discussed the overall purpose of the RPS meeting. They agreed that the meeting needs a (more) focused purpose in order to assure that participants have a valuable experience and also to ward off further cuts in funding.

A proposed focus for this meeting is leadership training, with the goal being not only to strengthen current resident leaders but also to begin mentoring future chapter-level and College leaders. Ideas along this line included having chapters sponsor residents/fellows that exhibit leadership potential, providing more information (background on ACR governance, proposed resolutions and other topics of interest) to participants prior to the meeting and providing leadership training programming. The committee will look at other organizations that have done similar programming in the past for ideas.
