ACR Fellowships:

E. Stephen Amis, Jr., M.D. Fellowship in Quality and Safety
The E. Stephen Amis, Jr., MD, Fellowship in Quality and Safety, sponsored by the Commission on Quality and Safety, will provide the opportunity for one radiology resident or fellow to obtain direct exposure to the functions of the Department of Quality and Safety at the ACR. The department manages programs that accredit facilities in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, PET, radiation oncology and ultrasound. The department is also responsible for the ACR Appropriateness Criteria®, Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards, BI-RADS®, RADPEERTM, radiation safety, quality improvement, Pay for Performance initiatives and the National Radiology Data Registry.

The goal of the fellowship is to expose the candidate to various areas of the Department of Quality and Safety along with the ACR’s Annual Meeting and Chapter Leadership Conference (AMCLC). The fellowship is split into two sessions so that the candidate can participate in key activities. The chosen candidate will visit one week in the fall as ACR guidelines are drafted and will return for 3-4 days in late spring to attend the AMCLC when the guidelines are debated and approved. The candidate will be required to write a paper on a specific ACR activity which he/she focused on while at the College for submission to the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

Applications for the 2008-2009 academic year must be postmarked by March 31st.
For more information contact Lavonne Robbins in the ACR’s Quality and Safety Department at (800) 227-5463, ext 4570.

J.T. Rutherford Government Relations Fellowship
The J. T. Rutherford Government Relations Fellowship, named in honor of the ACR's first legislative consultant, was founded in 1993 to provide radiology residents direct personal exposure to the ACR's government relations activities. This fellowship allows the residents to gain an understanding of the state and federal legislative and regulatory processes and the ACR's role in such; it also informs residents about the governmental factors that play important roles in shaping the future of radiology. This one-week program includes a historical background on the ACR's congressional activities and exposure to the ACR's government relations initiatives and their relationship to the other activities conducted by the College.

Six fellowships are available each year. Applications for the 2009-2010 academic year must be postmarked by May 15, 2009.

Valerie P. Jackson, MD Education Fellowship
The Valerie P. Jackson Education Fellowship provides the opportunity for a radiology or radiation oncology resident, fellow, community or academic radiologist, radiation oncologist, or medical physicist, or for an educator with a specific interest in the field of radiology, radiation oncology, or medical physics to gain direct exposure to the operation of the Education Department of the American College of Radiology (ACR). The department is responsible for providing educational activities that meet the educational needs of radiologists, radiation oncologists, and medical physicists through stand-alone meetings, enduring materials, and online presentations, all of which contribute to lifelong learning in radiology.

The primary goal of the fellowship is to acquaint the fellow with development processes for a wide range of lifelong learning activities for residents and practitioners, as well as all aspects of compliance with ACCME accreditation processes. A secondary goal is to provide an opportunity for Education Department staff to learn from the fellow about the current healthcare environment and the educational needs of residents and practitioners so that the College may better serve its members.

The length of the Fellowship is one week. Applications must be postmarked or received by e-mail or fax by May 15, 2009.
