New Feature on the RFS Web Site – RFS State Map
Now live on the RFS Web site is an interactive, color-coded state map to
help you identify the current status of your state’s Resident and Fellow
Section and representatives from your state to the ACR national meeting.
State chapter Resident and Fellow sections provide a great pathway to
meeting local residents and getting involved with your local ACR chapter
and learning about issues at the state level.
Please visit the RFS Web site to view information for your state. If
your state doesn’t already have an RFS, you can start one! Click here to

2008 AMCLC - It's Not Too Late to Attend
The Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) will meet again this year in
Washington, D.C., along with the ACR leadership during the ACR's Annual
Meeting and Chapter Leadership Conference (AMCLC). The AMCLC is viewed
favorably by resident representatives from across the United States and
Canada as a time to rejuvenate interest in the organizational side of
radiology. The RFS meeting provides attendees with an opportunity to
discuss hot topics affecting the field of radiology and current training
issues.
All residents and fellows are welcome. Please mark your calendar and
plan to attend May 17-22, 2008.
Visit www.acr.org/amclc08 for more information.

ACR Wants to Hear from You
As part of an ongoing, outreach effort to its membership, the ACR would
like you to complete the 2008 ACR Value Proposition Survey. This survey
is critical in assessing the priorities of ongoing functions performed
by the College to promote and better serve our members.
The ACR Value Proposition Survey is part of a larger effort to further
engage the ACR membership, which is currently overseen by the ACR Task
Force on Membership Engagement under the leadership of Kimberly
Applegate, M.D., FACR. Click here to complete the survey.
Recap – 2008 Meeting of the Association of University Radiologists (AUR)
The 56th Annual AUR meeting was held March 25 – 29 in Seattle, WA.
Topics of interest covered during the meeting included the ABR’s changes
to the board certification process, potential changes to fourth-year
curriculum, radiology informatics and life-long learning.
N. Reed Dunnick, M.D., FACR outlined the changes to the board
certification process and fielded questions regarding the new format.
Beginning with the entering class of 2010, a general competency exam
will be given at the end of 36 months of training. The exam will
incorporate physics with the 11 currently defined areas of concentration
in an image-rich, computerized format which will be administered
locally. Approximately 15 months after the completion of residency
training a second exam will be administered. This exam will also be
image-rich and incorporate physics; however it will be tailored to an
individual’s practice concentrations and focus on up to four areas of
subspecialty radiology.
In relation to the ABR changes, potential changes to the fourth-year
curriculum were also discussed with a focus on the challenges that may
be encountered by both large and small programs. Concerns were raised
regarding clinical and call coverage, the current fellowship system, the
effect the new exam format may have on resident education, and the
future of matching medical students into radiology.
A topic covered in many sessions during the meeting was radiology and
informatics. Various speakers presented ideas for how radiology can use
informatics to improve resident education with a focus on didactic
learning, research language standardization, and quality control for
large, shared databanks. Also discussed was the role that informatics
may play in resident education to enhance active learning, to
standardize resident training, and to provide documentation of training.
Lastly, David M. Irby, PhD gave a talk on the future direction for
medical education, in which he addressed a shift in the emphasis from a
“binge and purge” style of education and examination to life-long
learning. Dr. Irby believes the future of medical education will
incorporate four main ideas, integration, individualization, insistence
upon excellence and identify formation.
